Q & A with Anthony. See why he’s ranked best lawn and landscaping company in Howell:
How long have you owned your lawn business?
I’ve owned my own lawn & landscaping company for three years, but truly, I’m a jack of all trades. I can fix just about anything. Beth and I are multi-taskers so we do a little bit of everything. We consider ourselves handymen(women), craftsman, and all around contractors.
What gets you up in the morning?
Our kids are what motivate us. We get out of bed in the morning with the drive to support them and our family.
What is your favorite thing about being part of LawnGuru?
We started our own business to be in charge of our hours, scheduling and workload. Working with LawnGuru allows us to do all of that while adding jobs to our route. We can focus on doing the work we enjoy and making money, instead of dedicating half the time to organizing routes, marketing to new customers, and handling customer service.
What is your favorite brand of mower and why?
Scag, by far. I think everyone should have one. We have two Scags, one Gravely and one Exmark. Our Scag makes much cleaner lines than any of our others. I once compared my stripes with a buddy of mine who has an Exmark, and our lines are always more defined.
What’s the worst thing you’ve ever run over with a lawnmower?
Oh, wow, there’s been a few things over the years! Rocks, dog toys, wires that are not buried or marked (I can’t see this in 4 inches of grass), kids toys, etc…
What’s the craziest experience you’ve had while cutting grass?
We were out mowing a lawn in South Lyon, Michigan when all the sudden—right in my path—I see a small little head pop up. I shut my mower off and walk toward the mystery object to get a closer look and come to find out it was a fawn! It was the coolest experience I’ve ever had. It’s not every day you actually can get this close to these wild animals. The deer was so young. I had to move her because she was in the center of my current customer’s lawn. So, I just put her off to the side under a tree for shade. By the time I was done mowing, the mother had come back to get her young and they went on their way.
What do you do when you’re not working?
Work, work, and other work. We’re constantly working. We keep buying new equipment all season to do more work. Aside from cutting grass and clearing snow, I want to be able to provide a variety of additional services to my customers.
What is your favorite outdoor service to perform and why?
There is nothing like mowing a good looking lawn and laying fat stripes across the whole thing. I enjoy snow plowing too. Between my fiancé Beth, my son Jared and I, we make a pretty good team! They haven’t learned the snow plowing ropes yet, but I’m working on teaching them this winter.
What’s your biggest pet peeve when mowing lawns?
There are definitely some things that we wish our customers knew! Not only would it help us service them better, but it just makes the job easier.
It’s not our job to clean up your dog droppings, and we shouldn’t have to work through it. Not only does it get our equipment covered and we have to spend time cleaning it, but more importantly, there could be bacteria on there that spreads to another property and causes someone else’s dog to get sick. I have 5 dogs so we definitely understand dog droppings, but be courteous and please clean up after your furry family members.
